World Autism Awareness Day

World Autism Awareness Day, recognized on the 2nd of April each year, is a globally acknowledged occasion that encourages member nations of the United Nations to take proactive action to raise awareness about individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The purpose of this day is to educate the public about autism and promote inclusivity and acceptance.

The number of autism cases worldwide is increasing, with an unprecedented number of children being diagnosed and receiving therapy. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 1% of the world's population, or over 75 million people, has autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In 2022, 1 in every 100 children were diagnosed with ASD. In the United States, 1 in 54 children have autism, with boys being four times more likely to receive a diagnosis than girls.

The theme of this year's World Autism Awareness Day is 'Empowering Autistic Voices.' The aim is to offer more support and empowerment to people with autism, allowing them to lead fulfilling lives and have successful careers. You can watch YouTube here. Enjoy!

What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Autism Spectrum Disorder represents a wide spectrum of conditions that are primarily characterized by notable challenges in several areas such as social skills, repetitive behaviors, as well as speech and nonverbal communication. These conditions are not merely health-related issues, but they significantly affect the day-to-day life and interactions of those who live with ASD. The purpose of this day is to shed light on these issues. It is a day intended to raise awareness about the unique strengths that individuals with ASD possess, as well as the specific challenges they face. By doing so, it seeks to foster understanding, promote inclusivity, and encourage support for these individuals in our communities.

The inception of World Autism Awareness Day came about due to a United Nations General Assembly resolution "62/139. World Autism Awareness Day". This resolution was passed in council on November 1, 2007, and was then officially adopted on December 18, 2007. Ever since it has been a significant day in the calendar for promoting a comprehensive understanding of ASD and advocating for the rights and well-being of those affected.

In addition to raising awareness, World Autism Awareness Day also serves as a reminder for everyone to celebrate the unique talents of those with autism, while also reinforcing the need for improved research and interventions for ASD and fostering understanding and acceptance in society. This day, therefore, plays a crucial role in highlighting the need for helping individuals with ASD to live full and enriched lives and be an integral part of society.

There are several ways to support World Autism Awareness Day:

  1. Spread Awareness: Share information about ASD on your social media platforms. You can share facts, personal stories, or resources that can help educate others about autism.

  2. Donate: Consider donating to a charity that supports individuals with autism and their families. These organizations often provide resources, support research, and advocate for the rights of those with autism.

  3. Participate in Events: Many organizations hold events on World Autism Awareness Day. This could be a community gathering, a charity run, or an online webinar. Participating in these events can help raise awareness and show support.

  4. Wear Blue: The color blue is often associated with autism awareness. On April 2nd, consider wearing blue to show your support.

  5. Educate Yourself: One of the best ways to support World Autism Awareness Day is to educate yourself about autism. Learning about the experiences, challenges, and strengths of those with autism can help promote understanding and acceptance.

There is a diverse collection of books about autism, including works authored by individuals living with the disorder. Autism Speaks features an extensive list of recommended books on its website. Here are a few of their suggestions.

In addition to books, numerous shows have been produced highlighting the lives of individuals with autism. An example is the Netflix reality show "Love on the Spectrum," which chronicles the dating lives of people with autism.
