UNMASKING AUTISM: Discovering the New Faces of Neurodiversity

Updated: Apr 2

I recently read "Unmasking Autism" by Dr. Devon Price and found it to be an eye-opening and informative book. This book is perfect for anyone who wants to learn more about autism and the experiences of Autistic individuals.

One of the main topics in the book is masking, which is when an Autistic person hides their traits to fit in with societal norms. Dr. Price shares their personal experience with masking and provides many examples of how it can impact an individual's life, from causing severe anxiety to suppressing harmless stimuli.

However, the book is not just about the challenges of masking. Dr. Price also offers practical exercises and tools that encourage self-expression and celebrate the unique strengths and interests of Autistic individuals. These exercises include reframing autism stereotypes, rediscovering personal values, and more.

"Unmasking Autism" is a powerful call to action for greater public acceptance and accommodation of neurodivergent individuals. By embracing neurodiversity, we can all learn to appreciate and celebrate the differences that make us unique, whether we are Autistic or neurotypical. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to promote a more inclusive and compassionate society.

What I found particularly valuable about "Unmasking Autism" is the way it challenges common misconceptions about autism. Dr. Price does an excellent job of unpacking the stereotypes and myths that often surround Autistic individuals and offers a more accurate portrayal of what it means to be Autistic.

In addition to its informative content, "Unmasking Autism" is also an engaging and easy-to-understand read. Dr. Price writes with clarity and compassion, and their personal anecdotes and stories help to illustrate the many points they make throughout the book.

All in all, I highly recommend "Unmasking Autism" to anyone who wants to learn more about autism and how to support and empower Autistic individuals. This book is a valuable resource for educators, healthcare providers, parents, and anyone who wants to promote greater understanding and acceptance of neurodiversity.

I am planning to read it again because there is always something to learn from this book!
